Both Students and Teachers Could Benefit From Greater Digital Literacy

Which group is more digitally literate: students or teachers? It depends on who you ask. A recent study provided some interesting results in terms of both groups’ assessment of their own and each other’s digital literacy. While 45 percent of students described themselves as “highly digitally literate,” only 14 percent of faculty gave them this same rating. When the tables were turned, 49 percent of faculty considered themselves highly digitally literate; only 23 percent of students agreed. Why the disconnect?

It may be time for a sit-down. This study shows a definite gap between student and faculty perceptions of their own, and each other’s, digital literacy. The good news: both sides believe that digital technology holds the potential for promise in education. Conversations around what comprises the definition of “digital literacy” can be a good starting point for each group to identify the attributes that are important to them and a baseline for moving forward with building relevant digital skills.
