Students have been making things for ages in education—just consider the “shop” and “home ec” classes of old. Today’s technologies, though, have heightened the focus on making, and makerspaces. Makerspaces are becoming a trendy option in education, a hot topic at SXSWedu and even included as an “important development” in EDUCAUSE’s 2015 Horizon Report. Is this type of learning valuable, though?

Beyond the flash and hype of new technology, the process of making holds value says Jessica Parker with the Maker Education Initiative. She points to three key reasons why: the promotion of social and emotional learning, the learning process itself and an increased opportunity for reflection. Even without a high-tech makerspace environment, educators have opportunities to incorporate the concept of “making” into their curricula.
