Sign of the Times

Pennsylvania State University is rethinking how it trains future faculty members after doctoral students flocked to a crash course in online teaching.

Our take

Teaching Teachers to Teach Online

There appears to be pent-up demand for training designed to help educators bring technology to their classrooms in meaningful ways. At least that’s what Pennsylvania State University learned recently when an online offering expected to draw about 30 students, instead attracted 300. Current, and aspiring teachers, clearly know that the ability to effectively navigate a tech-enabled learning environment will be key to their, and their students’ success. Is there more you could be doing to provide them with the knowledge they need?

Chances are there is pent-up demand among your instructors for more information and training on how to effectively leverage technology in their classrooms—and how to better engage with students in online environments. There are plenty of online resources that may be available to help fill this gap; it is also likely that there are early adopters and tech rock-stars in your midst that might be called upon to lead, or participate in, these efforts.
