Since December 2012, the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research has been developing an ambitious strategy to bring schools into the digital age. This strategy aims to make the most of the opportunities offered by digital technology for the benefit of pupils’ success.

France Makes Major Investment in Digital Education

On May 5, 2015, French President Francois Hollande announced a major digital initiative for the country’s educational system, initially focused on middle school grades. What will it take for France to effectively leverage technology to aid teachers, boost learning outcomes and, importantly, maintain costs?

This initiative will include training, equipment, resources and a focus on innovation and is based on lessons learned from some large scale experiments that foreshadowed the announcement. An investment of 1 billion euros in public funding over the next three years will fuel the initiative. One key to the initiative’s success is to ensure that the new technology is viewed as an aid to, and not a replacement for, teachers in the classroom.
